EV Charger Installation at Home: What Every Derbyshire Driver Needs to Know

Electric vehicle adoption is accelerating across the East Midlands. We explain the installation process, costs, and grants available in 2026.

The number of electric vehicles on Derbyshire roads has more than doubled since 2024, and with the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel sales approaching, home EV charger installation has become one of our most requested services. If you are considering making the switch, understanding the installation process and requirements will help you plan effectively.

The first step is always a home electrical survey. Your existing consumer unit must have sufficient capacity and spare ways to accommodate a dedicated EV circuit. Most homes built after 1980 will be fine, but older properties in parts of Chesterfield, Belper, or Ripley may require a consumer unit upgrade first. We assess this during our free site survey and provide a transparent quotation for any preparatory work.

We recommend 7kW chargers for almost all residential installations. While 22kW chargers exist, they require three-phase power — something virtually no British home has. A 7kW charger will add approximately 25-30 miles of range per hour, meaning a typical 60kWh battery will charge from 20% to 80% overnight. For the vast majority of Derbyshire commuters, this is more than adequate.

Smart charging features are now standard on quality units. These allow you to schedule charging during off-peak hours, integrate with solar panels if you have them, and participate in grid flexibility schemes that can actually pay you for smart charging. The OZEV grant may have ended for most homeowners, but many energy suppliers now offer discounted rates or subsidised installation in exchange for smart charging participation.

Installation typically takes four to six hours and involves running a dedicated cable from your consumer unit to the charge point location, installing an RCBO protective device, and mounting the unit on an exterior wall. We handle all building control notifications and provide a BS 7671 installation certificate. All our EV installations are backed by a six-year workmanship guarantee.

Positioning matters more than many homeowners realise. The charge point should be within reach of your vehicle's charging port when parked normally, protected from direct rain if possible, and positioned where the cable will not create a trip hazard. We have installed chargers in driveways, garages, car ports, and even on front walls for terraced homes with on-street parking permits. Whatever your situation, we will find a safe, compliant solution.
