How to Maintain Your CCTV System Year-Round: A Homeowner's Checklist

Regular maintenance keeps your CCTV system reliable and your footage admissible. We share our professional maintenance checklist for residential customers.

A CCTV system is only as good as its maintenance. Cameras that are dirty, misaligned, or suffering from degraded connections will provide footage that is useless when you need it most. While professional annual maintenance is always recommended, there are several tasks that homeowners can perform themselves to keep their system in peak condition between service visits.

Lens cleaning is the most important monthly task. External cameras accumulate dust, pollen, spider webs, and rain spots that gradually reduce image clarity. Use a soft microfibre cloth and a small amount of lens cleaning solution โ€” never household glass cleaner, which can damage protective coatings. Pay particular attention to cameras facing prevailing winds or positioned near trees, as these accumulate debris faster.

Check your recording system weekly. Log into your NVR or cloud app and verify that all cameras are online, recording correctly, and displaying the current date and time. A surprising number of systems have had a camera fail for weeks without the owner realising, because they never check. Set a weekly reminder on your phone โ€” it takes thirty seconds and could save you enormous frustration later.

Trim vegetation quarterly. Trees, shrubs, and climbing plants grow surprisingly quickly, and a branch that was nowhere near your camera in January can completely obscure the view by June. Keep at least a one-metre clear zone around each camera. This also reduces the false alerts triggered by swaying branches on windy days.

Test your night vision monthly. IR illumination degrades over time, and what looks fine during the day may be almost invisible at night. Wait until full darkness, then check each camera's night image quality. If faces are unidentifiable or the IR range has clearly reduced, the camera may need replacement. Modern IR LEDs typically last five to seven years.

For homeowners who prefer to leave maintenance to professionals, our 3H Security maintenance packages include two annual visits covering all the above tasks plus detailed system health checks, firmware updates, and connection testing. We cover Chesterfield, Alfreton, Belper, Heanor, Ilkeston, Matlock, Mansfield, Nottingham, and all surrounding areas. A well-maintained system is a reliable system โ€” and reliability is what security is all about.
