A detailed look at the multi-camera CCTV system we designed and installed for a high-street retail business in Chesterfield town centre.
In March 2026, a well-known independent retailer on Chesterfield's High Street approached us with a significant problem. Despite existing CCTV coverage, shoplifting losses had risen to over £800 per month — a figure that threatened the viability of the business. The owner suspected that blind spots in their ageing system were being exploited, but was unsure how to address the issue without a complete overhaul.
Our first step was always a comprehensive site survey. We spent a full morning mapping the store layout, identifying traffic flow patterns, and reviewing footage from the existing system. The problems became immediately apparent: the existing four-camera setup left three critical blind spots, image quality was too poor to identify faces beyond three metres, and there was no coverage of the rear stock room where high-value items were stored.
We designed an eight-camera system specifically tailored to retail security. The front entrance received a 4K turret camera with facial recognition capability, providing clear identification of every person entering the store. Four dome cameras with 360-degree coverage eliminated all floor blind spots, while two focused cameras covered the till area and high-value display cabinets. A final camera monitored the stock room door with motion-activated recording.
The system integrated with the store's existing network and provided live viewing via a smartphone app, allowing the owner to monitor the shop remotely. AI-powered analytics highlighted unusual behaviour patterns — customers spending excessive time in blind spots, groups splitting up to distract staff, and individuals repeatedly visiting without purchasing.
Within the first month of installation, the results were dramatic. Shoplifting incidents dropped by 78%, and the two incidents that did occur were fully captured in 4K with clear facial images passed to Derbyshire Police. The store owner reported that the visible cameras alone acted as a powerful deterrent — several known shoplifters simply stopped entering the premises.
The total investment was £2,400 including installation and twelve months of remote monitoring support. At the reduced loss rate, the system paid for itself in under four months. This is exactly the kind of measurable security improvement that drives our work at 3H Security — practical solutions with clear, quantifiable results.
